Ha Dang I'm glad goldfwinch told me you don't have to pay sales tax on clothing sales in MA before I filed for this quarter (still haven't filed for q01 for 2008 anyway). Also why don't you have to pay sales tax on clothing? I'm not complaining but it doesn't make very much sense. I have the worst accountant. I wonder if I can get back what I accidentally paid in so far? PS You don't have to pay sales tax on t-shirts in MA but you do on bathing caps But you don't on neckties But you do on handkerchiefs But you don't on costumes But you do on bowling shoes It's nice how it all makes perfect sense. Here's this:
MY STUPID LIFEThis is the penultimate comic in the "Ants!" story arc. The final chapter will go up on Friday, and then you can all stop getting the heebie jeebies every time you read my comic (NOTE: I make no promises that the comic will, at that point, cease giving you the silly willies, the loosey goosies, or the flabby habby babbies). New flyer, the top part of which features a not-so-subtle Evan Dorkin homage: Now that the Marked Men are breaking up, the Copyrights are officially the best band in America as of right now. |

cuckolding my pork I made some corned beef, tater and asparagus hash today. Don't tell bacon that I'm cheating on her. Possibly permanently. I think I like fresh hash better.
There is a weird pink cloud hanging over my parking lot today. Thick to the point that it looked like a snowstorm from across the room. Inhaled some of it and started coughing a little, so it's HEPA filter time. Hope it wasn't a baby chemtrail that lost it's mommy.

free associating isn't free As some of you know, Diesel Sweeties is quitting newspapers and will be back to internets-only as of mid-August. Of course, I wound up with an end date that conflicts like crazy with prepping for and going to San Diego Comicon. Ouch. So! I'm writing my last few weeks of print comics this week and next and could use a hand free associating. Pick me some topics, memes, characters you miss, loose ends to tie up or the like you'd be amused to see in a newspaper. I'm not doing anything that's unfit for print and will **not** use anyone else's jokes, but your help with brainstorming would be most welcome! I'm not asking you to do any writing, that's my job and I won't give it up. I could definitely use some sparks to make sure I don't do all comics about the same darn thing in a marathon session. I love working in big heaps of comics, sifting and editing the whole thing as a mass. In other news, it's also the last day to get free/cheap shipping on DS stuff. Saturday's reading. This past Saturday I did a reading in Toronto, at gay pride. I got so nervous that I ended up spending half the time telling the most embarrassing personal anecdotes I could think of. Sometimes, when I get embarrassed, the only way I can deal with it is to embarrass myself even more on purpose. This is probably some sort of way of trying to maintain control. If I’m going to be embarrassed, it might as well be because I’m telling you about making a misguided pass at a lesbian who has just suffered a head injury, or about having two pee holes, not because sometimes when I read at a gay event I feel like I’m just not gay enough. Or like I have something to prove.
Maybe I’m underestimating people. I know that there are people who show up to the readings no matter where they are, gay event or not, because I don’t read very often. And they wouldn’t care about the gay content percentage of the reading. And probably most others don’t care anyway. But there’s always someone at those things who needs me to place myself on some sexuality spectrum. I read with some gay authors last year, and afterwards another author asked me, "So, you have a girlfriend, right? What are you even doing here?"
I don’t know what to say to that. I have to give you a detailed sexual history? So you can count how many boys I kissed against how many girls? It’s like the government and their bloodline percentages to prove I’m really Indian. Man, I'm not there to trick people into thinking I'm gay. I'm there to read from my writing.
And anyway if you could see how hot my girlfriend is, you’d understand. |

Today's the day I'm goin' ta Arizona That's right. It's been 7 years since I've been ta Arizona. The last time I was out there was fo' Spring Break. This was before 9/11. I haven't taken a flight since then. I know things won't be the same when I prepare fo' my flight. Airports require passengers carry they toiletries in Ziplock bags so they can see what they're carryin'. Security is also makin' people take off they shoes ta see if they're smugglin' anythin' dangerous inside. I think that's jus ludicrous that security's makin' people do that. Travelin' airlines was better before 9/11 since security wasn't so paranoid and passengers could be trusted. I'll be goin' out ta Arizona wit the main purpose bein' gettin' a second opinion on my medical condition. I'll be bailin' my hood at either noon or one. My flight departs at 5:45. While I'm out in Arizona, I'll have a chance ta visit my grandparents, aunt, and uncles. My one uncle went bikin' wit my parents last year, so I've gotten ta visit wit him. I haven't seen my aunt or my cuzes in 3 years. My two cuzes out there have gotten even older. I haven't seen my other uncle in 15 years when he went ta my Aunt Kari and Uncle John's weddin'. It'll pretty be an inferno out in Arizona. The only temps I get here are all sub 100. That gives an idea on how hot Arizona is. U won't be hearin' from me 'til I get back on Wednesday. Go ahead and look at the recent entries all u want. That page won't change 'til Wednesday. That's all u'll be hearin' from me fo' a while. On Wednesday, I'll be back wit a briefin' of my trip. 'Til then, I'll see y'all in July. Skillz has took off fo' the Grand Canyon State. Current Mood: kinda stoked about ArizonaCurrent Music: Where You At - Kanye West featurin' The Game and Ludacris |

A Softer World: June 27th http://www.asofterworld.com/index.php?id=322Today I started reading Broken Angels, by Richard Morgan. Altered Carbon was great. Everything I wanted from a pulpy sci fi mashup thriller. This book is supposedly less pulp, more war stuff, but I can enjoy that too. I like stories about badass, hyper trained dudes. People who are very good at what they do. Also, I love stories about people who get beaten again and again but don't give up. I am a sucker for that shit. This is why I loved Mulder from the X-Files. Dude got shot, stabbed, possessed by alien gunk, beat up, drugged, and just kept going after it. I've been listening to Neil Young's greatest hits over and over again, alternating with Rising Down, by The Roots. The Neil Young is so beautiful. And it's the perfect balance to the Roots album, which is one of the best rap albums I have heard in years. It's so harsh and intense. Some of the songs get me riled up like nobody's business. They're just bang bang bang bang bang, relentless, with amazing drums and lyrics that are more brilliant the more you listen. I keep thinking, fuck, this is exactly what I want from rap. Go listen to "75 Bars" at their myspace. The rhyme scheme is amazing. On first blush, it sounded like rhyming the same word again and again, but there's internal rhymes too, and then the repeated rhyme starts bouncing around in the lines, too. And Maggie and I have been watching season two of the Muppet Show. I love the early Muppet Show stuff. This was back when they looked just insane, like if you asked mental patients to make puppets out of garbage. And the jokes are so cheesy and classic. Statler and Waldorf make me laugh with just the stupidest jokes. It's a kind of television that I wish people still made. I don't mean to make big sweeping statements or anything, but the Muppet Show is the greatest American work of art ever. |

Hey, kids! Comic:
MY STUPID LIFEIn merch-related news, my store will be down for one to two weeks starting right now while the whole operation moves to a new distributer. Don't worry, Avi the Friendly Merch Guy is still my behind-the-scenes cohert, he just won't be the person filling orders and going to the post office any longer (he wanted more time to focus on the behind-the-scenes stuff that's FUN to do, not just work, and I'm happy to oblige). With this new distro and screen-printing operation, orders will be filled and shipped faster and with better accuracy, the site should be easier to navigate, and you'll still get random goodies with all the orders. So! It's good news all around. In the mean time, a few of my items are still available at Interpunk.com, so you can feel free to spend some money there for the next week or two: Alright! Have an awesome weekend, don't drink and drive. |

TEH MALE I cannot stress this enough, college students and people between jobs:
If you do not mind a drug test and live in Americaland, apply at the post office to be a "casual carrier"* for a summer or holiday season sometime. You will learn your town and you will learn details of how the mail works that will be invaluable for the rest of your life. You will also lose ten pounds and learn the true meaning of futility.
Ten years on, I still find uses for what the USPS taught me on a daily basis. Also, driving the truck is genius. Screw the Peace Corps, the Mail is where it's at.
***
A "Casual Carrier" is a non-uniformed, non-union temporary mail carrier. You apply and take a test and get trained and shit, but you're not a full gov't employee.
